Cathy Makihara
In 1988, as a result of the Japanese Canadian Redress Settlement, I came up on an advertisement to work during the implementation period as an office worker. This led me to meet issei and nisei throughout British Columbia. The people who I met and the stories I heard, compelled me to stay on working in the Nikkei community. It was apparent that there was need for health care for the seniors, affordable housing, the need to preserve the rich history of Nikkei in Canada and to create a place of meeting. In time, this led to the development of Nikkei Place, which has been a project near and dear to me. For the past 15 years, I have worked as Executive Director and CEO of Nikkei Place.
