Jay Hirabayashi, Rage,
Documentation of Performance. 1987. Video Out Distributions.
ABOUT THE FILM: The dance expresses the subconscious repression of emotion within a white painted Butoh dancer through a series of surrealistic scenes depicting events during WW II when people of Japanese ancestry living in B.C. were forced to leave the coast. This tape is a document of a multi-media performance which utilizes slides and traditional Japanese drumming.
Alejandro Yoshizawa, From Issei to Sansei: The History of My Grandfather’s Life.
ABOUT THE FILM: From Issei to Sansei: The History of My Grandfather’s Life is a film made by Alejandro Yoshizawa which retraces the life of his grandfather, Hiroshi (Jim) Yoshizawa (1916-1998). The film seeks to better understand what life was like as a Japanese Canadian; from immigration to Canada, life before World War II, during the War, and beyond. The film moves chronologically through the life of Hiroshi Yoshizawa, while also providing an important historical context, as told through images and interviews with family members today.
